In November 1907, over 10,000 militiamen set up forty-eight camps in Manguri on the outskirts of Dongdaemun, the East Gate of Seoul, app ointing Lee In-young as their top commander and Heo Wi as general commander. They advanced into Seoul, and engaged the Japanese in a bloody battle that resulted in the retreat of the militia, for they were grossly outnumbered by the Japanese. Despite their failure to take/en ter Seoul, they are considered heroes nonetheless. On July 31, 1991, the Dong-A Daily dedicated a monument in honor of the militia at the entrance of Manguri Park. |
